Growing conditions
Sun pitchers (Heliamphora) by day by night a typical home the coldest it takes · for Sun pitchers (Heliamphora)
Needs a controlled setup Usually needs a terrarium, grow tent or cooled/heated space. What it needs in your home
Aim for: A grow tent or terrarium with night-time cooling, humidity, and a grow light.
- 🌙Cool nights 50–63°F, about 11°F cooler than a typical home at night. A room or basement that cools off at night works, or a bright window in a cool room in winter; otherwise a highland chamber: an insulated grow tent or cabinet with a small AC unit or thermoelectric cooler on a night timer.
- ☀️Days 64–79°F: normal room temperatures are fine.
- ❄️Coldest it takes 40°F. Keep it away from cold windows and doors in winter.
- 💧Humidity 60–90%, more than most homes (30–50%). A terrarium, a grow tent with a humidifier, or a cabinet; or group plants on a pebble tray. It can get used to 50–60% if weaned slowly (see Bringing it home).
- 💡Light Very bright: about 25,000 lux for 12-16 h/day under LEDs (ICPS). Usually a lit terrarium or cool greenhouse.
- 🚰Water and soil Mineral-free only (rain, distilled, RO; TDS under ~100 ppm, ideally much lower); constantly moist, well-drained; keep roots cool. Pot it in live or long-fibre sphagnum with perlite/pumice.
Bringing it home
Can adapt, slowly Sun pitchers adapt to 50–60% if weaned slowly, hybrids most easily; many species stay at their best in a tent or terrarium.
When it arrives: keep it in a clear bag or under a dome in bright shade for a week or two, then open it a little more every few days. If new growth wilts, close it back a step.

Tepui summits run 7-23C (45-74F). Large plants can die if held above 26C (79F) for long periods. CPN says night cooling isn't needed if the roots stay cool, though some species (H. hispida, ionasii, neblinae, elongata) want a drop. ICPS says they need fertilising. Minimum is approximate.
